About Artist

Namaskaram! I’m Eliza, an artist based in New York. My work celebrates the beauty, complexity and stories of South Asian people.

I was born in Kerala, India, raised in the U.A.E, and now reside in the U.S.A. My parents understood that they wanted more than just to survive - they wanted to thrive, hence why we moved around a lot. This shaped my early understanding of belonging and the absence of it.

I’ve been drawing since I was a child but quickly learned that it was a risky career path so everything stayed in sketchbooks and scrap paper until I hit rock bottom in both my personal and professional life and realized that the only thing I had left in me was my art and creativity.

I like to explore the intimate intersections of identity, culture and emotions of us South Asians and to be completely honest, the root of my work is a love letter to my younger self, to the girl who learned to see herself through someone else’s gaze.

I’ve realized over the years that my community and the culture we come from doesn’t allow people like me to thrive and instead of waiting for permission or for people in positions of power to validate us or to share the stage, I decided to create a world where I can share my stories and flourish.

I decided to create what I have been craving for my whole life.

I hope my work inspires you to choose yourself even more every single day.
